RANJINI COREA (NEE WICKREMASINGHE)

RANJINI COREA (NEE WICKREMASINGHE) was the wife of broadcaster, Vijaya Corea and the daughter of Edward Wickremasinghe and Muriel Wickremasinghe (Nee Dissanayake). She received her secondary education at CMS Ladies' College, Colombo and Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya.

Ranjini took to teaching as her primary career and was attached to St. Joseph's College, Colombo 10. During this time, she also got involved in journalism, running a page for adolescents, in the then Mirror Newspaper of the mid-1960s.

Thereafter, Ranjini moved over to Public Relations and was attached to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) from 1969-1983, during which time she met her future husband, who was also employed by the station. After her marriage and the birth of their son Viran and daughter Sashika, Ranjini resigned from the SLBC in order to better dedicate her time to the care of her young family.

She was diagnosed with a deadly colon cancer in 2009, from which she fully recovered. Thereafter, in 2012 she was diagnosed with a primary breast cancer. Since 2010, she devoted her time mainly to seeing to the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of cancer patients, in a spirit of deep gratitude to God. She attributed her ability to face the difficulties of many bouts of fighting cancer, to the firm assurance she had through her life transforming faith in Jesus Christ as the means to salvation, wholeness and eternal life. She held this assurance to the very end.

She passed away peacefully on 10th December 2014, surrounded by family.
